KEEP CALM AND CARRY SOMETHING

In light of what is going on in the world today and for the last several years, the overused slogan and image KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON has a real place.  I can’t quite remember when I was first made aware of the crown and the cheery little saying, but overnight it did appear to be everywhere.  Then it started cropping up in various other forms. Suddenly it was KEEP CALM and every thing  you could imagine.

I got curious this week and  Googled it. Now I will say I’m not a big fan of Wikipedia, it so full of misinformation. And I’m not a big believer in crowdsourced encyclopedias.  But they are fairly reliable when things are in the public domain. This is what they say about the Keep Calm posters.

“Keep Calm and Carry On was a motivational poster produced by the British government in 1939 in preparation for the Second World War. The poster was intended to raise the morale of the British public, threatened with widely predicted mass air attacks on major cities.[1][2] Although 2.45 million copies were printed, and although the Blitz happened, the poster was hardly ever publicly displayed and was little known about until a copy was rediscovered in 2000. It has since been re-issued by a number of private companies, and has been used as the decorative theme for a range of products.[3]

It was thought that only two original copies survived until a collection of 20 was brought in to the Antiques Roadshow in 2012 by the daughter of an ex-Royal Observer Corps member.[4]

I found this very interesting.   SO I wasn’t imagining it.  It has only been in the last ten years of so that it took off. I don’t think any slogan since I Heart New York, morphed into I “Heart” everything  has turned up in so many places. But this week it felt truly right. Which makes sense if you know how and when it all started.

This one really got me thinking how far the trend had traveled.
