P – TOWN

Earlier this week Glenn and I went to Provincetown for two days.  I knew very little about Provincetown. I knew it was sort of a hangout for gay men and artists, but had taken on more of a Fire Island vibe over the years.  It is an odd combination of old New England town and gay vacation spot. The thing I did not know about Provincetown is it is where the Pilgrims first landed. Now perhaps you all know that. I did not. I thought they landed on Plymouth Rock. So did Glenn. Or at least he told me we would get to see Plymouth Rock in Provincetown.  Glenn knows a lot about American history, so there was no reason to doubt him. I pretty much daydreamed my way through American History so I never rely on myself for such details.  Though I was very excited by the thought of seeing Plymouth Rock.  He asked the guy at the desk where it was and the guy showed him on the map. So I guess someone who lives there thought the same thing. We could not make out the map well. So I asked a guy who worked at the public parking lot where I could find Plymouth Rock, he looked at me like I was brain dead and told me “Plymouth“.

BUT – they did land there, they just didn’t stay long enough to put down roots. They did that in Plymouth – thus the rock. But the fine residents of Provincetown want you to know it was the first stop so they have a little park and plaque and a giant monument. I doubt Plymouth is as much fun.
