50@50 is going to spend some time over the next several weeks doing Doc Talk. I’m taking my Flipcam and I’m interviewing some of the top doctors in their fields. It will be like you are sitting in the office with them. Hopefully I will be asking questions you have and haven’t’ asked and perhaps I will be getting some answers to things you haven’t thought of. I am going to try and cover as much medical territory as possible and meet with as many specialists as will let me turn the camera on them.

DOC TALK

So, we have  established in many ways fifty is not the new thirty. Though there are certain ways in which we are much younger than our predecessors. Without question science and medicine are keeping us going far longer than any people at any time in history. In fact Boomers will be the longest living group to hit the planet. To put it in perspective in 1870 only 3% of Americans were over 65. By 2025 the year  I will turn 65 there will be close to 70,000,000 people over the age of 65 and over in this country. That is larger than the population of France. That is close to a third of our population.

Getting there has clearly gotten easier. But how we get there and our quality of life depends largely on how well we take care of ourselves.

The old adage “Nothing matters if you don’t have your health” takes on an entirely different meaning the older we get.

I hope most of you watch these. It may be some of the most important blogging I do. I know many people like to ignore their health and avoid doctors. As someone said to me the other day – ”I don’t go to doctors, that’s where sick people go.”

I take the opposite point of view, something could happen, but I am going to try damn hard to get to that 65 mark and then on to 2045 and 85. And these are some of the guys who are going to help me get there.

Today we start with what everyone should have – a good Internist.

Dr. Bernard Kruger is one of New York’s more esteemed doctors.

He is a stellar diagnostic doctor, as well as an art collector, tennis player and father of four. He has put up with me for over 30 years so you know he must have patience. He was kind enough to spend some time with me last week and talk about in terms of our bodies just where is fifty in relation to thirty; and what should we be doing?

Peter Stern do not switch to CNN stay with me here…..
